TITLE + Pretty Loaded
TEAM + by the peeps at Big Spaceship

DESCRIPTION + Pretty Loaded’s creators call it “a tribute to a vanishing art form.” Which is to say, the site collects flash animations that tell you how long a page takes to load, and most of them are great examples to the attention to detail within the craft.

The archived bits zip by quickly, in stark contrast to the days of dial-up service, when loading messages (or “preloaders”) seemed to take forever. The highlights include an inflating Trojan condom (it shoots offscreen when loading is complete) and an old-school preloader for Old School (it features Will Ferrell, naked and running in place). It’s a narrow but fascinating slice of Internet history...for once, the wa i t i n g is worth while.

TITLE + Voice Drawing
TEAM + by Ze Frank

DESCRIPTION + A voice-based illustrator that turns your words into lines, shapes, and patterns. It’s “quite difficult,” Frank warns, and he’s not kidding. You steer the illustrator by raising and lowering your voice — start by trying to make a simple circle. Stick with it, and you’ll soon be doodling faces. But if you’re feeling self-conscious about talking to your computer, try whistling, or breathing heavily, or mapping your favorite songs: James Brown and psychedelic-era Beatles work especially well, so turn up your stereo, stare at the screen, and picture yourself in a boat on a river.

TITLE + Darkon
TEAM + the people at SeeThink

DESCRIPTION + Darkon is a brilliant new documentary about LARPing (Live Action Role Playing) - a cross between Lord of the Rings and fantasy football. You start out thinking, "What a bunch of hysterical losers!" and end up thinking, "These LARPers rock!" Now, this is by no means a groundbreaking site, but not every website has to blow your mind to be effective. What's notable is the use of a MySpace profile and blog as a promotional tool, with the filmmakers acting as the main marketers. It puts a friendly, accessible face to the film, and makes you feel like you're in on a cool secret among a close circle of friends. Which, in a way, you are.
